The Thompson was manufactured with wooden parts. This presented a small problem when handling the weapon, as the wooden stock often got in the way. The stock was also susceptible to shattering or damage upon mistreatment or battle.

When the stock of the weapon was broken, the whole weapon almost became useless, as the Thompson relied on it’s stock to provide the gunner with the stability they needed to use a weapon with such high kickback. The stock was also fixed; meaning that it could not be folded in a more compact position. Despite this, it remained in service until the 1950’s, where newer types of SMGs and Assault Rifles proved to be more effective.

It is now considered a collectors item, and very obsolete.The MP40 countered the problem of a bulky stock by making a very interesting one. It was a metal folding stock that could be swung out from underneath the weapon.

This made it compact and with the stock folded up, it would give the gunner the accuracy he needed to fire at targets that were normally considered too hard to hit. The MP40 was notorious for jamming, and it was later countered by one of the first assault rifles, known as the SturmGweher1944, or StG44. The StG44 was just more advanced overall, but did not come into extensive use during WWII.

The MP40 was copied after the war to produce the M3, and the MP41 was a variation of the ’40, only with a fixed wooden stock. The MP40 is now a very hard weapon to own, as not many are left, even less in working condition. They were later used in the Spanish Civil War, and by the Israeli Armed Forces.MP40.
